LG G4 Release Nears as Launch Event Confirmed

LG G4 Release Nears as Launch Event Confirmed is a post by Cory Gunther from Gotta Be Mobile.

With the Samsung Galaxy S6 and HTC One M9 both official and now available for pre-order, the next major release will be the LG G4. We’ve seen a few leaked images already, but come late April the company will officially announce the new smartphone. Invites have started going out today teasing the G4, and potentially revealing one of its features.

Last year the LG G3 was announced in late May and arrived over a month later, far behind the competition. However, that release was earlier than the G2 before it, and the G2 arrived even earlier than the original Optimus G. Here in 2015 LG is doing the same thing again, and releasing the new LG G4 earlier than the model before it. The launch is officially set for April 28th.

In early February the new LG G4 smartphone was somewhat confirmed by LG themselves, following some early rumors, and soon those will all be put to rest when the officially announce the new device to take on the Galaxy S6, One M9, iPhone 6 and more. Below is the invite going out, a quick teaser, and a few additional details.

Why you should wait for the LG G4 release.

This is reportedly the new LG G4

Last week some images surfaced of what’s reportedly being called the LG G4 Note, a device coming later this year to take on the Galaxy Note 4, iPhone 6 Plus, and anything else, but today we’re also getting a potential release date for the highly anticipated LG G4.

A few weeks back we received what could be our first images of the new LG G4, and they showed a device that’s wrapped in a familiar plastic frame, buttons on the rear, but surprisingly had a curved display similar to the LG G Flex series. No other LG G flagship has had a curved display, but that could finally change here in 2015. And while we don’t know what to expect, and have seen rumors of an aluminum design, pictures of a plastic device and more, today’s announcement shows leather.

G4-launch

See the Great, Feel the Great.

Shown above is the official LG G4 launch event reminder and “save the date” image being sent to select members of the press. They’re clearly putting the “G” out there, confirming this will be about a new LG G smartphone, one which will most certainly be the new G4 we’ve been hearing about.

It comes as no surprise that the invite doesn’t show a device or shape of what’s to come, but they are hinting at one major design change, or at least an option. Similar to the new Moto X released in late 2014, the new LG G4 could be made out of leather on the back. Or at least a limited edition could have leather vs the plastic we’ve seen in leaks. They mention you’ll be able to feel the greatness of the new phone, suggesting the leather materials, not to mention the entire invite has a nice stitched leather backdrop.

On Tuesday, April 28th, LG will be hosting an event in 6 cities: New York, London, Paris, Seoul, Singapore and Istanbul, to announce something new. That’s about all we know right now, but we’ll update the moment more details start to emerge.

Most likely leather won’t be the only option available, as we’re not sure how durable that will be nor if all potential buyers will want to take that route. Motorola offers regular plastics, wood, and leather on the 2014 Moto X, and it (along with others) will have some competition come late April or early May as the new LG G4 arrives.

Reports and rumors suggest a curved 5.5-inch 2560 x 1440 Quad-HD display, an 8-core processor with 3GB of RAM (Snapdragon 810 or maybe the 808) 32GB of internal storage with a micro-SD slot for expansion, and new to the G line, a curved display. The leaks of a curved device may not be accurate, so we’ll have to wait and see. What we do know is that the LG G4 will potentially be announced on April 28th, and rumors are suggesting a mid-May release date. Stay tuned!

HTC One Android 5.0 Lollipop Update Continues in the U.S.

HTC One Android 5.0 Lollipop Update Continues in the U.S. is a post by Cory Gunther from Gotta Be Mobile.

At the beginning of this month we received word that the original HTC One (M7) Android 5.0 Lollipop update was ready to start rolling out to users in the United States, and while it has already arrived for some, today we have more good news. While most of the focus has been on the newer HTC One M8 as of late, today the AT&T HTC One (M7) is getting Android 5.0 Lollipop.

We’ve seen Android 5.0 Lollipop updates arrive for the Galaxy S5, HTC One M8, LG G3 and more, and now the original HTC One (M7) from 2013 is up next. HTC themselves confirmed it’s rolling out in Europe a few weeks back, and recently T-Mobile announced it’s headed to the United States.

Last year HTC confirmed many of its popular and most recent Android smartphones would receive an upgrade to the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop update, and it’s slowly but surely hitting more original HTC One handsets. HTC is busy pushing the update out for both the original One (M7) as well as the newer HTC One M8. At the same time, the new HTC One M9 hits carrier shelves on April 10th.

HTC-One

Back in January HTC admitted that they wouldn’t meet their initial goal of rolling out Android 5.0 Lollipop to all HTC One owners within 90 days of the Lollipop release date, which was February 3rd. Then a few days later the Sprint HTC One (M7) Android 5.0.1 Lollipop update started, and since then many users have been waiting for good news.

However, another HTC One Android 5.0 update has started today, and it’s in the United States. The AT&T HTC One (M7) Android 5.0 Lollipop update has received technical approval, and is rolling out over-the-air to all owners starting today, and will continue all week.

In the usual and very appreciated HTC fashion, HTC’s own Mo Versi posted a few details over on Twitter, letting all owners with the AT&T version know that it’s on the way and should be arriving today, or soon.

Yesterday he confirmed that the AT&T HTC One M7 Android 5.0 update would start today, March 31st, and we’re now hearing from select owners that it has indeed started to arrive. Owners can expect lots of great changes, enhancements, and new features.

AT&T has confirmed some owners will see a small Android 4.4.2 KitKat update, then the bigger Android 5.0 Lollipop update right behind it. Meaning you should probably update over WiFi, and have a full battery to complete the process.

Google’s Material Design user interface changes have been added to HTC Sense UI 6.0, which will be on board with the Android 5.0 update once it arrives for all. We’ve already seen plenty of this one the HTC One M8, and a new Sense UI 7 from the HTC One M9 could come to the original HTC One, at least parts of it. Users can expect plenty of changes, a better visual experience and lockscreen controls, new notification pulldown bar and much more.

It’s worth noting that while the Android 5.0 Lollipop update is an excellent change that delivers a fresh new look, lively animations, and tons of new features, we’ve heard quite a few complaints over the update. Users with the HTC One M8 have been frustrated over multiple problems, but hopefully most of those don’t plague the original HTC One getting the update today.

This is good news for original HTC One owners, as they’ve been patiently waiting for the update to arrive. However, Google recently announced Android 5.1 Lollipop with tons of fixes and stability improvements to 5.0, so another update is likely already under way and should hopefully be here in the next few months. Initial reports claimed HTC would not push 5.1 to the original HTC One (M7) but we’re now hearing that update could come later this year. Stay tuned, and drop a comment below when your One M7 gets Android 5.0 Lollipop.

How to Take a Screenshot on the HTC One M9

How to Take a Screenshot on the HTC One M9 is a post by Cory Gunther from Gotta Be Mobile.

The shiny new two-tone aluminum HTC One M9 was announced earlier this month and is finally starting to ship for those who’ve pre-ordered, and will hit most carrier stores in the US starting April 10th. Now that consumers are starting to get their hands on it, we’re getting asked a lot of questions. Here we’ll explain how to take a screenshot with the HTC One M9.

HTC’s new handset is packed full of fancy features. Like an improved 20.7 megapixel camera, new theme software to change to the look, and more, but one thing we constantly receive questions about is something as simple as taking a screenshot. Whether you want to screenshot something funny posted to Facebook, a meme of your least favorite NFL team, or even important emails snippets, screenshots are an easy way to save things.

Taking a screenshot or screengrab is one of the oldest tricks on Android, but the way it has been achieved may of changed a few times, not to mention some manufacturers do things differently than others. To take a screenshot with the HTC One M9 you’ll just need to hold down a few buttons, and you’re all set. Read on to learn how.

HTC-One-M9

If you’ve used an Android device in the past few years you’ll be right at home and its the exact same as almost every device that isn’t made by Samsung. The Galaxy series does things a little different, but HTC screenshots are just like any other Android device, and very similar to the iPhone.

All you need to do is hold two buttons down at the exact same time, pause for a brief moment, and you’ll see the screenshot get captured and saved. Below are the exact details, the few easy steps you’ll need to know.

Instructions

Just like we mentioned above, saving what is on the screen of your new HTC One M9 smartphone is extremely easy. So easy in fact, that you’ll probably be upset you didn’t try this before.

Press the Power/Sleep button (now on the bottom right side) of your HTC One M9 along with the volume down button at the exact same time. Simply position what is likely your middle and ring finger then push both power+volume down at the same time, hold until you see the visual screenshot on screen (or the camera shutter sound) and let go. It’s that easy.

M9-buttons

Once done you’ll see and hear the screenshot capture, which can then be accessed in multiple ways. Pulling down the notification bar as shown below will instantly show the screenshot has been captured and saved, and you can even share it right from the notification bar thanks to Android’s expandable notifications.

HTC-One-M9-screenshot

Tap the Circle and two arrows “share” icon in the notification pull-down bar of the screenshot and you can instantly send to a friend in a text message, add to an email, or any of the many share integrations with Android. This is a great way to share things on your screen with ease.

Alternatively all screenshots are also saved to the HTC One M9 internal storage and users can simply navigate to the gallery just like you would to retrieve and view a photo. In the HTC gallery app you’ll notice everything is categorized, and if this is your first time you’ll see a new album or category for “screenshots” and that’s where your screenshots will be located.

That is it, you’re all done! You’ve now learned how to quickly and easily capture whatever is on the screen of your smartphone to share and do with it as you please. You can also customize the icons in the notification pull-down bar, called “quick settings” by pulling down twice and tapping the edit button next to the gear-shaped settings icon. In here is a one tap screenshot button. Which you can tap and it will snap a screenshot of whatever is on the screen. Stay tuned for more HTC One M9 coverage, details, and how tos in the near future.

How Much Data Does the Periscope App Use?

lundi 30 mars 2015

How Much Data Does the Periscope App Use? is a post by Craig Lloyd from Gotta Be Mobile.

Twitter’s new Periscope live-streaming app is becoming a huge hit, but those with limited data plans might be wondering how much data it uses.

Periscope is a new app from Twitter that lets anyone live stream what they see through their iPhone’s camera and broadcast it to the world. It was released late last week and arrives just a couple of weeks after Meerkat — another live-streaming app — was released.

Periscope and Meerkat are similar in a way that allows users to instantly live stream anything from their phones, but Periscope integrates seamlessly with Twitter, making it one of the better options for Twitter users.

While the main feature of Periscope is to be able to instantly live stream from the point of view of your iPhone’s camera, it’s also a fun app to use as a viewer, as the front page of the app constantly has new live content being refreshed with random users live streaming whatever they feel like. It’s fun to see what crazy things people are up to, and it’s certainly fun to sit there and waste a bit of time just viewing live streams.

periscope

However, these apps use up a lot of bandwidth, considering that you’re watching live video, which is fine if you’re on a WiFi connection, but if you’re out and about on a data connection, having fun with Periscope can cost you if you have a limited data plan.

Personally, using Periscope for about 30 minutes just browsing through live streams resulted in around 400MB of data being used. That’s not a whole lot from the face of it, but if you only have a 2GB monthly data plan, 400MB is almost a quarter of your data for the month, so if you were to use Periscope every day, your data allotment would be gone in the blink of an eye.

Before you know it, you’re paying overage fees on your smartphone plan if you’re not careful.

There are several things you can do to keep an eye on your data usage. If you’re on Verizon, you can use the carrier’s iOS 8 widget, which gives you your data usage right in the Notification Center, making it easy to see how much data you have left for the month.

verizon-widget

Another thing you can do is if you think you’re going to go over your data allowance for the month, you can actually temporarily boost your data plan just for the month to avoid having to pay more-expensive overage fees.

For example, most of the tiers in Verizon’s More Everything plans are separated by $10 per month, so by simply bumping up to the next tier just for the month will save you $5, since overage fees start at $15.

Otherwise, you’ll have to be more aware of how you use your data. Make sure you connect to a WiFi network whenever possible and turn off cellular access to certain apps that don’t necessarily need it. You can also disable iOS 8’s Background App Refresh, which prevents apps from refreshing in the background while you’re not using them, which can use up data without your knowledge.

It’s also a good idea to prevent cloud apps from using cellular data, as uploading photos and other files with your iPhone can add up quickly.

If you do all this, then you’ll hopefully have more data to play around with, and you can use Periscope more often without feeling nervous about going over your monthly limit.

Amiibo, $50 Credit Among Blockbuster PS4 Deals

Amiibo, $50 Credit Among Blockbuster PS4 Deals is a post by Travis Pope from Gotta Be Mobile.

Ahead of the Easter Holidays in the United States, retailer Target is slashing the cost on big name games for the Xbox One, offering cheap Amiibo figures for the Nintendo Wii U and giving every PS4 shopper $5 in credit.

News of Target’s ridiculous game deals first surface this past Sunday when the retailer posted online versions of is weekly ad promising deep discounts on relatively new games and even the consoles themselves. Like most deals offered by Target, whether the savings included in the ad are available for you depends on where you live and whether Target has any of the items still left on store shelves.

target deals

As far as the Xbox One is concerned, there’s not much savings to be had. Target is advertising the Halo: The Master Chief Collection Xbox One bundle that Microsoft and other retailers are also selling for $349.99. Halo: The Master Chief Collection is the massive compilation of Halo games that include John 117. It originally arrived on store shelves last year. That being said, headlining the games deal is a $50 Target gift card for users who purchase the PS4 bundle that contains a digital copy of The Last of Us Remastered. The Last of Us originally launched in 2013, but was remade with better graphics and access to downloadable content for PS4 users last year. Besides new graphics there’s an improved combat mechanic and other extras included in the later version bundled in this PS4 deal. Amazon currently sells the The Last of Us Remastered for $47.49.

Battlefield Hardline, Evolve, Call of Duty Advanced Warfare, Grand Theft Auto 5, Bloodborne, MLB 15: the Show and NBA 2K15 are among the titles that Xbox One and PS4 users can pick up with a buy one get one free offer directly from Target this week. All of those games are relatively new, meaning any savings for users at this point is a pretty decent bonus.

Joining the impressive list of games on sale at Target are big discounts on Disney Infinity Marvel Super Heroes 2.0 and Skylanders Trap Team. Skylanders Trap Team normally costs $69.99, but its on sale for $39.99 this week. The Disney Infinity Starter pack is normally $74.99, but costs just $39.99 this week. Late last year Nintendo revealed is own plastic figures that add different classic characters to their games. Nintendo calls their figures Amiibo and sells them individually. Target’s blockbuster games deals this week include a 25% discount on individual Amiibo, Skylanders and Disney Infinity figures. This part of the Target games deals alone is big news as the physical characters rarely go on-sale without being resold used at places like GameStop.

Of course, with deals like this there are terms and conditions. Target says that user can only purchase a single PS4 Last of Us bundle and get the $50 gift card. Additionally, the $50 Target Gift Card can only be used for a future purchase. Presumably, store employees won’t have a problem with shoppers paying for games or other accessories separate from their PS4 console purchase.

The Buy One Get One Half Off doesn’t exactly have any onerous terms, but doesn’t include one caveat. Target says that it stores will only chop half off the game that costs the least of the two shoppers purchase. In doing so Target has ensured that users who purchase the most recent titles stand to save more than those who buy cheaper titles.

The advertisement does note that its stores aren’t giving out rain checks for the games. Target is also offering $30 gift cards with the purchase of the iPad Air and iPad Air 2. These deals will end on Sunday, April 5th.
