Nexus 9 Android 5.1.1 Release Rumored is a post by Cory Gunther from Gotta Be Mobile.
This week the latest Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update has finally arrived for the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 tablets, and even a few lucky Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge owners are getting the absolute latest version of Android with loads of bug fixes from Google. However, the Nexus 9 hasn’t seen an update since November, and is the only device still on Android 5.0.1 Lollipop.
Back in October Google announced Android 5.0 Lollipop along with the new Nexus 6, Nexus 9 tablet, and the Nexus Player. All of those devices have been updated to Android 5.0.1, Android 5.0.2, and Android 5.1 Lollopop, except for the Nexus 9. However, it looks like the Nexus 9 Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update could finally be here soon.

For whatever reason even older devices like the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 are on Android 5.1, while the Nexus 9 is still stuck on the initial Android 5.0.1 Lollipop software from November. It never received Android 5.0.2, never received Android 5.1, and now some devices have started to get the new Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, all while the Nexus 9 is sitting back plagued with bugs and poor performance. If you own a Nexus 9, read on for more details.
Sadly the Nexus 9 has been completely left out in the dark by Google. For whatever reason the impressive 8.9-inch matte rubber and aluminum Nexus 9 tablet that was so promising late last year hasn’t received the typical “Nexus” treatment, and hasn’t seen any updates to improve performance and deliver new features.
A large part of the software update delays (or lack of updates completely) could be due to the NVIDIA Tegra K1 64-bit processor powering the Nexus 9 tablet, but we can’t say for sure. What we do know though, is it’s the only Nexus devices released in the last two years that hasn’t seen an update to Android 5.1 Lollipop.

Users are extremely frustrated over this, and have taken to Twitter, Google+ and other areas to voice their concerns. According to Android Police, one Google employee has confirmed the Nexus 9 update wasn’t forgot about, and it’s actually coming soon. This was in regards to the Galaxy S6 getting Android 5.1.1, all while the Nexus 9 is still stuck on 5.0.1 from November.
According to Sascha Prüter, a head engineer over at Google, the Nexus 9 OTA’s “aren’t far out” and should be released as soon as humanly possible. He doesn’t work directly on that product, but had this to say in response to some Nexus 9 owners complaining about the lack of updates.
I don’t know the timeline (because I’m not directly working on the N9) so saying anything would be speculative and not helpful at all. The team is battling with some last minute bugs and once these are addressed we will roll the update out as fast as possible.”
At the moment we don’t have any additional details, but with both Nexus 7 variants and the Nexus 10 receiving Android 5.1.1 Lollipop right now, the Nexus 9 should technically be up next. Well, it should have been first, but obviously that isn’t happening. In early April some sightings of the Nexus 9 running Android 5.1.1 were spotted, so we know it’s being tested and coming soon, so hopefully this Googlers comments are accurate, and an over the air update will be here sooner rather than later.
For now only a select few Nexus devices have received Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, but now that it’s finally rolling out we’re expecting Google to push updates and release factory images for the Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 9 and other devices in the coming days and weeks. We’ll update the moment the Nexus 9 update surfaces, as there are countless owners eagerly awaiting its arrival.
