Earlier this year ahead of newer devices like the LG G3 or Galaxy S5, LG updated the old and aging LG G2 to Android 5.0.2 Lollipop. Since then we’ve seen Android 5.1 and Android 5.1.1 Lollipop hit an array of devices, but LG’s latest smartphones have yet to see updates.
Over the course of the last few weeks, not to mention back in June, some reports and rumors were floating around that LG was in fact planning to skip Android 5.1 completely, and the LG G2, LG G3, and even the new LG G4 would never see Android 5.1, and instead jump straight to Android M later this fall.

And while getting the latest Android M update is great news, skipping all the current updates full of battery improvements and bug fixes is bad for all users. Today though, we received good news for LG G2 owners as LG reportedly confirmed the G2 Android 5.1.1 update is coming soon. Read on for the latest details, and what owners need to know.
When LG pushed out the highly anticipated LG G2 Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update earlier this year it brought tons of new features, Google’s new material design interface, and lots of improvements, but also a lot of problems. Not listed in the changelog was a pile of small issues and multiple bugs that have plagued many users, and an update to Android 5.1 Lollipop should fix most of them.
LG G2 Android 5.1.1 Release Date
At the moment there are no exact details regarding the LG G2 Android 5.1.1 update, but according to AndroidPit one LG representative out of Korea confirmed some extremely good news. Stating that the update for the LG G2 right to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop is not only in the works, but testing has nearly completed and the update could be here within the next 1-2 months.
According to LG the rumor of skipping Android 5.1 Lollipop was correct, but that is because the company will be updating all of its devices right to the latest Android 5.1.1 Lollipop that was released by Google back in May. This means that all the bugs should be fixed, battery life improved, and the famed memory leak problem will also be solved. The same should hold true for the LG G3, which is even more good news.
LG G2 Android 5.0 Problems
Google released Android 5.0.1, 5.0.2, 5.1, and now the latest Android 5.1.1 Lollipop was released in mid May. Since then we’ve seen some HTC, Motorola, and many Samsung Galaxy devices receive it, but only a small handful of LG devices. Like the LG G Flex 2. All while the LG G2 is still stuck on Android 5.0.2 and plagued with tons of problems. Not to mention some small carriers outside the US haven’t even pushed out Android 5.0 yet, meaning some are still on Android 4.4.4 KitKat.
We’ve heard horror stories about battery life being extremely bad, nearly 50% less in some cases, users devices aren’t charging properly, reboots, app crashing, WiFi issues, text message keyboard problems and more. And while some of these may be LG-related, others are problems inside of Android 5.0 that Google has since fixed with 5.1.1 Lollipop. The famed “memory leak” issue causes apps to slow and eventually crash, or make the phone reboot, which is what we’re getting the most complaints about.

Above we’ve put together a list of some potential problems and fixes for the LG G2 Android 5.0 update, but it’s worth noting not all users have reported issues. Some are loving all the changes, while others, not so much. Your best bet is a factory data reset, which will erase all user data, but that’s been shown to fix most of the LG G2 Android 5.0 update issues.
All of the problems above have led users to complain about the device to the point that some say it’s unusable. This is bad news for LG, but the company looks to fix all that by going right to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop soon.
LG G2 Android 5.1 Lollipop Changes
A few weeks ago LG released Android 5.1.1 Lollipop for the G Flex 2, which was announced back in January and was running Android 5.0.2, which is a good sign that Android 5.1.1 is coming soon for others. Add that to the news that surfaced today, and an update should be here sooner than later.

The LG G2 5.1.1 Lollipop update should improve battery life, fix the app crashes and stability problems, introduce some new features to lockscreen controls, which we’ve seen already arrive for the international LG G3, and more. The report also claims many of the UI improvements and a few features from the new LG G4 will be included in the G2 update.
It’s possible that LG is currently working on an update for the LG G4 and LG G3 first, and will then move to the LG G2 in the next few months, but it’s hard to say for sure. What we do know though, is that if these reports are accurate, all of LG’s latest devices will see an update directly to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop before the end of summer.
US Carriers & Delays
Carriers in the United States were last to update the LG G2 to the latest Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update, and that will likely be the case with 5.1.1 when it’s finally released. This is due to US carriers having an extremely strict testing phase, one that typically takes 4-6 weeks to complete.
This means that if LG can deliver the G2 Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update within the next two months as mentioned above, we should see it arrive for all carriers in the US a few weeks later. Hopefully it arrives before September, but with such a limited amount of information it’s hard to guess. This also opens up the possibility of delays from US carriers.
All said and done this is good news for LG G2 and G3 owners, as earlier reports claimed these devices wouldn’t see updates until Android M during the holiday months. Now we know Android 5.1.1 is being tested, and should hopefully debut on multiple devices in the US and elsewhere soon.
