How to Watch the Oscars Live is a post by Craig Lloyd from Gotta Be Mobile.
The Oscars take place later tonight, and if you want to catch all of the action while on the go, here’s how you can stream the Oscars live on your iPhone or other device.
The Oscars is one of the highest honors that an actor or actress can receive, and this year many great stars are nominated to receive one. Steve Carell, Bradley Cooper, Benedict Cumberbatch, Reese Witherspoon, and Julianne Moore are all nominated for Best Actor/Actress in a Leading Role and you can view the rest of the nominees on the Oscars website.
If you’ll be home to watch the Oscars, you can catch the ceremony at 7pm ET on ABC, and since it’s airing on ABC, you won’t need cable to view the show. Instead, you’ll simply need an antenna that can pick up local channels. From there, you’re good to go.
However, if you won’t be home to watch the festivities, you can still watch the ceremony on your computer or on your mobile device. Here’s how to make that happen.
On Your Computer
The only way to watch the Oscars live on your computer is by going to ABC’s website where it will be streaming the show, as well as give you access backstage and even red carpet.
Unfortunately, taking advantage of Watch ABC requires having a cable subscription, and live streaming is only available in select markets around the US, including Chicago, Fresno, Houston, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, Raleigh-Durham and San Francisco.
This was the case when the Grammy Awards were on, and those who wanted to stream it had to be in a specific market, but there wasn’t a requirement for needing a cable subscription. Instead, a paid subscription to CBS Access was required.
On Your Mobile Device
The Watch ABC app for iOS, Android, and Windows devices will be streaming the entire ceremony within the app, allowing you to watch the Oscars while on the go.
However, just as with ABC.com on your computer, you’ll need a cable subscription that you can verify in order to take advantage of the live streaming capabilities.
Also, Watch ABC on mobile is only available in select areas in the US — mostly major cities right now, and that’s one huge caveat of this service. Hopefully ABC spreads availability in the future, but if you’re outside a major city, you’re pretty much out of luck.
Unfortunately, ABC has exclusive streaming rights for the Grammy Awards, so you can only use the options above and live in one of the markets listed above in order to live stream the Oscars tonight. Otherwise, you’ll have to tune in on television to ABC at 7pm ET.
