3 Ways Free Apps Ruin Your iPhone & Android is a post by Josh Smith from Gotta Be Mobile.
We all love free apps, but they have a huge cost that you probably never know about. There are three real ways that using free apps can ruin your iPhone and Android experience.
If you ever feel like your Android or iPhone sucks because the battery life is too short, you never have enough storage or you’re using too much data you can place some of that blame on the free apps that you have installed on your phone.
This isn’t just an opinion that free apps slow your phone down and ruin the experience. A scientific study identified the real impact using free apps has on your wallet, your daily phone use and even whether or not you can take that next picture.
“Ads in ‘free’ apps drain your phone’s battery faster, cause it to run slower, and use more data,” said William Halfond, a co-author of this report, in an interview with Science Daily. The team compare 21 top apps from 2014 taken from the Google Play Store between January and August. Although the testing is done on Android
This is how free apps ruin your iPhone and Android experience and end up costing you money, time and adding to your frustration.
Free Apps Deliver Bad iPhone & Android Battery Life
Bad battery life is one of the biggest complaints we see from iPhone and Android users no matter which model they own or how new it is. The study found that free apps use 16% more energy than paid apps because they are using your cellular signal to reach out and download adds.

The research found that these free apps can even use as much as 33% more battery life than paid apps without ads and that can significantly impact the overall battery life.
Free Apps Use More Storage & Cost You Money
When you download a free app on your iPhone or Android it will end up using more storage than a paid app in due to the ads that you need to download.
The ads in free apps lead to more data usage and can take up more space on your phone. If you already push the limits of your phone’s storage and you love free apps you could end up unable to take a Photo because your phone is filled with free apps and ads.
The report also outlines increased data usage. Science Daily states, “On average, these apps use around 79 percent more network data, costing an estimated 1.7 cents every time they’re used.”
That’s a small amount, but think about how often you play addictive free apps on your phone. That price can add up quickly and carriers charge at least $10 to jump to the next level of a data plan.
Free Apps Slow Your Phone
If your phone feels old and slow despite being just 7 months old it might be the free apps slowing it down and making you consider an early expensive upgrade. Science Daily breaks down what this means.
“A phone’s Central Processing Unit (CPU) is like its brain — and ads eat up a lot of that brain power, slowing it down. Apps with ads take up an average of 48 percent more CPU time — 22 percent more memory use and 56 percent greater CPU utilization (the amount of time the CPU was used).”
Overall you could end up with a phone that feels slow not because it is old or because you are pushing it to the limit, but because you have too many free apps.
