A new video shows Apple Watch waterproof tests that you’ll definitely want to see you before you take your new Apple Watch anywhere near water.

Apple issued a warning about the Apple Watch waterproof rating, because it is actually just water-resistant. In the official documentation Apple warns not to get the Apple Watch anywhere near water especially high velocity water like in a shower or while using it on a lake or on jet skis — anywhere water moves at high speeds. The official warnings also say not to submerge the Apple Watch.

Tim Cook as previously stated that he wears in the shower and we’re starting to see people test just how waterproof or how water-resistant the Apple Watch actually is.

On paper and in the real world are two different things, so as soon as the Apple water arrived in the hands of people in Australia they put the Apple Watch to an underwater test. In the four-minute video below, you can see a torture test for the Apple Watch waterproof claims.

In a variety of tests we see the Apple Watch be completely submerged for five-minutes without any damage to the Watch we also see the Apple Watch survive a brief shower without any damage. After that test FoneFox took it a step further to go through a shower with soap and shampoo. Throughout all of this the screen remains responsive.

After this test, the team went swimming with the Apple Watch which is something that Apple does not recommend doing. While underwater you cannot use the Apple Watcher very well. This is the same for most devices with a capacitive touch scree, like your iPhone or your Apple Watch.

The good news, is that after finishing the swim when the Apple Watches up above water the screen and the digital crown still work. Finally the team left the Apple Watch underwater for about 15 minutes in a pool and the Apple Watch continues to work.

This isn’t a major shock, but this is very good news for users who plan to wear the Apple Watch to the beach or who don’t want to leave it in a locker while grabbing a fast shower at the gym.

In the official Apple Watch user guide, Apple outlines exactly what kind of water depth you can expose the Apple Watch to without damage. Officially the Apple Watch water resistance rating is IPX7, which translates to three feet for 30 minutes. Even with that waterproof level, the company warns users against;

  • Submerging Apple Watch in water for long periods of time.
  • Swimming or bathing with Apple Watch.
  • Exposing Apple Watch to pressurized water or high velocity water, for example, showering, water skiing, wake boarding, surfing, jet skiing, and so on.
  • Wearing Apple Watch in the sauna or steam room.

Apple also warns that after a drop or impact, the water resistance may not be as high as when you unboxed it. Apple states, “Water resistance is not a permanent condition and Apple Watch cannot be rechecked or resealed for water resistance.”

There are also 15 things you shouldn’t let your Apple Watch touch if you want to avoid damage, including perfume and lotion. If you think your Apple Watch will be near water and other dangerous activities, you may want to buy AppleCare+ for the Apple Watch.

Answer Calls on the Apple Watch

You can answer a call on your Apple Watch using it as a small Bluetooth speaker phone. After using a similar feature from a Samsung watch we know you'll definitely want to use this only for short calls and to be conscious of where you are taking calls. If you wouldn't talk on speakerphone, you shouldn't talk on your Apple Watch.
