5 Reasons Not to Install iOS 8.4 is a post by Adam Mills from Gotta Be Mobile.

Tomorrow is the iOS 8.4 release date and many iPhone and iPad users are going to be tempted to install the update the second it arrives at 8AM PST. The update is exciting but there are some reasons why you might want to think about skipping the iOS 8.4 update when it first arrives on your device.

In April, Apple confirmed a successor to iOS 8.3. The update wasn’t iOS 8.3.1 but iOS 8.4, a substantially larger update that brings huge changes to the company’s music app and a brand new Music service that will challenge the likes of Spotify, Rdio, and Pandora.

Today, Apple confirmed the iOS 8.4 release date and release time for the first time. The company didn’t issue a press release. Instead, former Beats Music CEO and current Apple Music senior director Ian Rogers did the work for it confirming an iOS 8.4 release date for June 30th and an iOS 8.4 release time for 8AM PST.

In other words, we have just a few hours to go before Apple releases a new iOS 8 update that delivers new features on top of bug fixes for iOS 8 problems. We don’t have the full change log yet but we expect iOS 8.4 to be a fairly large update. It will serve as the bridge between iOS 8 and the iOS 9 update that’s planned for the fall.

iOS 8.4 looks like it will be a solid update for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch and many of you are going to feel the pull once it appears in your device’s settings or in iTunes. That said, there are also some reasons why you might want to refrain from installing the iOS 8.4 update tomorrow or on the day that you finally notice its presence.

Remember, Apple never forces you to install an update and you will be able to install iOS 8.4 at any point after its release at 8AM PST tomorrow.

You Haven’t Prepared for iOS 8.4

While some of you have been preparing for the iOS 8.4 release for a number of weeks, there are others that will be hearing about iOS 8.4 for the first time tomorrow. If you are in the latter group, we highly recommend avoiding the iOS 8.4 update when it becomes available tomorrow morning.

We’ve said this before and we’ll say it again: You can never be too prepared for an iOS update. Most people come into a release date underprepared and those are the people that typically run into problems after installing new software. If you spend a little time preparing you and your device for iOS 8.4, you’ll be in much better shape.

We’ve put together a game plan for those of you that aren’t familiar with iOS 8.4 or iOS updates in general. We recommend taking a few steps before installing the update and we also recommend taking a look at this checklist of tips that will help you decide if installing iOS 8.4 is right for you.

If you spend a day or two preparing for the update and its fixes and features, you’re going to grow your confidence and minimize the risk of running into iOS 8.4 problems. Take your time. The iOS 8.4 update isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

You Aren’t Dealing With Problems

Apple’s iOS 8.4 update will bring fixes and enhancements to the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. That makes it appealing to those of you that are dealing with iOS 8 problems on iOS 8.3 or below.

iOS 8.4 has the potential to fix a lot of iOS 8 problems, yes, but it also has the potential to bring issues and bugs of its own. iOS updates always bring their own collection of problems, even updates that spend a ton of time in Apple’s beta programs. We expect iOS 8.4 problems to emerge in the minutes, hours, days, and weeks after its release.

So, if you’re having a great experience on iOS 8.3 or below, you’re going to want to be careful. If you’re not at all interested in the changes Apple’s bringing to the music experience, we recommend waiting a few days or even a week before coming to a decision about whether to install iOS 8.4 on your device.

This is Apple’s last big iOS update until iOS 9 arrives this fall so you’re going to want to be very patient and see how the release unfolds. There’s no reason to rush into things unless you need/want the music features or security updates.

You Need Your Device for School & Work

If you use your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch for school or work, you’re going to want to be especially careful with the iOS 8.4 release from Apple.

If you’re going to be dependent on your iOS device for a school project or work flow at your job, you might want to think about holding off when your iOS 8.4 update emerges.

While developers have been testing the update ahead of its release, there’s a chance you will see a drop in app performance after installing the iOS 8.4 update. You’ll need to decide if iOS 8.4 and its features are worth the risk. To do that, you’ll want to check in with IT if you have an IT department at your job. Some companies will give you a go-ahead after the release if everything is working normally. That may not come on the iOS 8.4 release date itself.

You’ll also want to check app reviews after the iOS 8.4 release to see how it’s performing. This could take time. Gathering feedback about iOS 8.4 and its many moving parts is going to be crucial if you use your phone for more than just chatting with friends and listening to music.

You’re Traveling

If you are going to be traveling tomorrow, later this week or in July, you might want to think about skipping iOS 8.4 until you get back.

The last thing that you want is for iOS 8.4 to wreck havoc on your phone or tablet while you’re in the process of traveling or in the buildup to your work trip.

If something were to go wrong while traveling, not having easy access to a personal computer or all of your Apple information could make things extremely difficult for you.

If you’re not going to be at home tomorrow or anytime in the near future and you’re not currently dealing with iOS 8 problems, you should hold off on the iOS 8.4 update until you get back. This way, if something goes wrong, it won’t bring down the trip and you’ll be able to easily access all of your necessary information including logins and IDs.

You Want to Jailbreak

We’ve heard that an iOS 8.4 jailbreak release is possible this week. Nothing is confirmed yet though and you won’t want to download and install the iOS 8.4 update until the jailbreak is released for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. If that ever happens.

There is no telling when the iOS 8.4 jailbreak might come so you’re going to want to hold off on installing iOS 8.4 until the all clear is given and the jailbreak is live.
