New Samsung Galaxy Android 5.1.1 Update Details Emerge is a post by Adam Mills from Gotta Be Mobile.
As expected, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Android 5.1.1 update and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Android 5.1.1 update have both spread in the United States.
Earlier this month, Samsung started rolling out Android 5.1.1 Lollipop updates to the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, and Galaxy S5. The Galaxy S6 Android 5.1.1 release was initially limited to T-Mobile in the United States though the updates have both spread to U.S. Cellular and to the international versions of the device abroad. Samsung’s Galaxy S5 Lollipop update is only available on T-Mobile at the moment.
With more Samsung Android 5.1.1 updates on the way for carriers outside the United States, we assumed that Samsung would push out more Android 5.1.1 updates for U.S. carriers. Turns out, that prediction was accurate. Today, the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge Android 5.1.1 updates have hit a brand new U.S. carrier.
Sprint Galaxy S6 Android 5.1.1 Update Rolling Out
Sprint today confirmed its Samsung Galaxy S6 Android 5.1.1 update. The update is currently rolling out to Galaxy S6 users though the carrier’s software update page notes that its “software updates may be released in stages and can take several days for delivery.”
Galaxy S6 users are encouraged to go into the device’s settings to manually check for the update. If it’s not lurking, then it may show up as a prompt later on today. Sprint’s roll outs typically don’t take more than a week to push out to everyone so Galaxy S6 users will want to keep an eye out as the day and week go on.
It’s A Massive Update With Bug Fixes
Sprint’s Android 5.1.1 update mirrors the Galaxy S6 Android 5.1.1 updates that have rolled out for T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, and others.
The update takes the device to Android 5.1.1, the newest version of Google’s operating system, and it brings several fixes and enhancements with it.
The update’s change log lists security enhancements and notes that Galaxy S6 users will not be able to downgrade to an older version because of changes to the security policy. Sprint’s Galaxy S6 Android 5.1.1 change log also states that it brings stability improvements, bug fixes and new/enhanced features. It also brings improvements to performance.
Sprint’s version of the Galaxy S6 Android 5.1.1 update is massive, around 560MB in size, and Galaxy S6 users will need to set aside some time to download and install it. Mileage will vary based on connection speed.
Sprint Galaxy S6 Edge Android 5.1.1 Update Pushing
Sprint’s also pushing a Galaxy S6 Edge Android 5.1.1 update alongside its Galaxy S6 Android 5.1.1 release. The update, like the Galaxy S6 Android 5.1.1 update, is rolling out to Sprint users right now and it should be available to a vast majority before the end of the day.
The carrier notes that it will also be pushing out in waves though again, Sprint’s Android updates typically wrap up within a week of the roll out’s starting point. Galaxy S6 Edge users can check for the update in settings or simply wait for the prompt to appear in notifications.
It’s Also Big & Comes With Bug Fixes
The Galaxy S6 Android 5.1.1 update mirrors the Galaxy S6 Android 5.1.1 update. It comes with security enhancements, bug fixes, and other smaller tweaks that are aimed at improving performance on the Galaxy S6 Edge.
Sprint’s Galaxy S6 Android 5.1.1 update is also a big one, around 560MB in size, so owners will need to set aside some time for the download and installation process.
If You Own a Galaxy Gear…
Sprint also notes that if Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge users own a Galaxy Gear device, they’ll need to update the Samsung Gear Manager application after downloading this update.
It’s still not clear if Samsung plans to roll out updates to the AT&T and Verizon versions of the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. Neither carrier has confirmed plans and neither is expected to ahead of potential releases.
Samsung is also rumored to have a Galaxy Note 4 Android 5.1.1 update up its sleeve for July though it’s not clear where it will land first. It’s clear that Samsung’s made the United States a priority so it’s possible that we’ll see it land for U.S. carriers first before shifting to other markets.
