If you want to send reminders to yourself at a certain time through email or want to send an email to someone at a later time, here’s how to schedule emails in Gmail.
While you may never think that you would have a use for scheduling emails to send at a later time, it can actually be quite convenient and useful. For instance, sending an email to someone right before the work day starts will ensure that they see the email right at the top of their inbox when they check their email in the morning.
However, if you usually don’t wake up before they start their day, sending an email in advance and scheduling it can be convenient, and it allows you send the email without having to get up early.
Plus, if you like to send reminders to yourself through email, you can send an email reminder to yourself and schedule it for a certain time, like if you’re needing to go to the grocery store after work, you can send a reminder or a grocery list to yourself and schedule it to hit your email inbox at 5pm sharp.
To do all of this, there’s a web browser extension called Boomerang that essentially adds more features to Gmail to make it even more useful. There paid Pro versions that you can use, but the free version does a great job and I’ll show you how to set it up to start scheduling emails and such.
Without further ado, here’s how to schedule emails in Gmail.
Scheduling Emails in Gmail
Google recently added a new feature in Gmail that allows users to undo a sent email within a certain amount of time. This feature used to only be available to those who enabled in Gmail Labs, but it’s not a default feature in Gmail.

However, one feature that Google needs to add is the ability to schedule emails to send at a later time, but until that moment comes, Boomerang is the next best option.
It’s a web browser extension that works in Firefox, Chrome, and Safari and can easily be installed by going to Boomerang’s website and installing the extension right from the home page. From there, the extension will install just like any other extension, and after it’s complete, Boomerang will be ready to use instantly in Gmail in your web browser.
When you open up Gmail, you should see a boomerang icon in the top-right corner of the window where you can access Boomerang settings and manage any scheduled messages that you have in the queue.
To schedule an email to send at a later time, simply start by composing a new email message. Once you’re ready to send it, click on the red Send Later button at the bottom. You’ll have several options to choose from as far as when Boomerang should send the email, like in 1 hour or 2 hours. You can select one of these selections and your email will instantly go into the queue and will send at the time that you selected.
You can also select a specific time and date down at the bottom. Simply just click on the calendar icon to select a date and type in a specific time that you’d like the email to be sent at.
If you scheduled an email to send later, but changed your mind, you can cancel a queued email before it’s sent out. Just go up to the Boomerang icon and click Manage scheduled messages.
From there, you can see a list of emails that you have scheduled to send and you can remove it from the queue, for which it will move into your Drafts folder in Gmail.
The only downside to the free version of Boomerang is that you can only schedule 10 emails per month, with paid versions offering you unlimited access starting at $4.99 per month, but if you’ll only use every so often, then the free version is most likely fine for you.
Boomerang has other features besides scheduling emails. In fact, the name of the extension comes from its main features. When you read an email but are too busy to respond to it, you can tell Boomerang to remind you about the email later in the day by essentially re-sending it to you.
Boomerang also includes read receipt capabilities, follow-up reminders and even click tracking, which tells you which links in your email have been clicked on.
It’s one extension that doesn’t get a lot of attention, but if you have emails you’d rather schedule, Boomerang is the extension to use.
